AGM vs EFB Batteries: Which Does Your Car Need?

Both support start-stop. Only one fits your car correctly. Here's how to tell.

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) and EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) are both designed for start-stop vehicles. They are not interchangeable — fitting the wrong one will trigger warnings, disable start-stop and shorten battery life dramatically.

When to fit AGM

  • Premium and high-electrical-demand vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Land Rover)
  • Cars with regenerative braking
  • Where the OE battery was AGM (check the label)

When to fit EFB

  • Entry-level start-stop cars (Ford Fiesta EcoBoost, Vauxhall Corsa, VW Polo)
  • Where the OE battery was EFB
